About Mr. Dave Barrett
Classical Christian Educator | Dual Enrollment Professor
Language Arts, Philosophy & Humanities | Student Mentor
Mr. Dave Barrett brings to Freedom Generation a remarkable legacy of more than 48 years in secondary education, but what makes his influence especially meaningful goes far beyond the length of his résumé. His life brings together academic excellence, decades of classroom experience, championship-level coaching, deep roots in the Oceanside community, and a lifelong faith in Jesus Christ.
Dave has been serving the Lord since he was a teenager, giving him a personal understanding of just how important the formative years can be in a young person's life. He knows firsthand that a student does not have to wait until adulthood to develop a genuine faith, discover purpose, or begin using his or her gifts to serve God.
That perspective has followed him throughout his life—as a teacher, coach, mentor, worship pastor, husband, father, and Christian educator.
A Lifetime Dedicated to Education
For more than 48 years, Dave has invested in young people through secondary education. He spent the majority of his distinguished career serving the Oceanside community as a credentialed Language Arts teacher, athletic coach, and mentor with the Oceanside Unified School District.
After retiring from public education, Dave could have simply closed the classroom door on an extraordinary career.
Instead, he brought those decades of experience to Freedom Generation Higher Education, where he has become one of our students' favorite Classical Christian educators.
His classes are not easy—and that is part of what makes them so valuable.
Dave believes students are capable of far more than they sometimes realize. His courses are intentionally rigorous, discussion-driven, and intellectually challenging, requiring students to read carefully, think critically, communicate clearly, defend their ideas, and rise to high academic expectations.
And they do.
Students have consistently thrived under his teaching, growing not only in their academic abilities but also in confidence, reasoning, communication, and their willingness to engage difficult ideas.
Dave has a gift for demanding excellence without losing the student in the process. He knows when to challenge, when to encourage, when to ask another question, and when a young person needs someone to simply believe that they are capable of more.
An Exceptional Academic Foundation
Dave's own education reflects the same commitment to lifelong learning that he expects from his students.
A Summa Cum Laude graduate, he earned dual Bachelor's degrees in English and Philosophy from California Lutheran University. He holds a Ryan Life Secondary Teaching Credential from Point Loma Nazarene University, an Associate's Degree in Social Science from MiraCosta College, and a Master of Science in Nutrition, Behavior, and Learning from National University.
His background in English, philosophy, social science, behavior, and learning gives him an unusually broad foundation for Classical Christian education.
He doesn't simply teach students how to write a better paper.
He teaches them to think.
Literature becomes an opportunity to wrestle with human nature. Philosophy opens conversations about truth. Writing forces students to organize their thoughts and defend what they believe. Discussion teaches them to listen, reason, question assumptions, and communicate with both courage and respect.
This is where Dave's academic experience and Classical Christian education come together so naturally.
Faith at the Center
For Dave, however, intellectual development cannot be separated from spiritual formation.
Having followed and served the Lord since his teenage years, he understands personally how profoundly a young person's relationship with Christ can shape the direction of an entire life.
He brings that spiritual depth into his teaching naturally—not as something added onto academics, but as part of how students learn to understand truth, morality, human nature, purpose, responsibility, and the world around them.
His students are encouraged to ask difficult questions rather than fear them. They learn to examine ideas carefully, test what they hear, communicate what they believe, and develop a worldview firmly grounded in biblical truth.
Dave wants students to leave his classroom academically stronger, but he also wants something deeper for them: wisdom, discernment, character, and a faith they understand well enough to carry with them into adulthood.
Preparing High School Students for College
Dave also serves as one of Freedom Generation's dual enrollment professors, bringing his decades of secondary teaching experience directly into the college-level classroom.
This gives Freedom Generation high school students an extraordinary opportunity: access to college-level instruction under the leadership of an educator who has spent nearly five decades understanding how young people learn and how to prepare them for what comes next.
Students are challenged to meet genuine college-level expectations while still having the benefit of mentorship, accountability, and an educator who knows how to help them make that transition successfully.
For Dave, dual enrollment isn't simply about accumulating college credits early. It is about helping students develop the discipline, independence, writing ability, critical thinking, communication skills, and intellectual maturity they will need long after high school.
A Championship Legacy of Coaching & Mentorship
Dave's influence on generations of Oceanside students has extended well beyond the classroom.
Throughout decades of coaching football and baseball, he has led championship teams and mentored hundreds of student-athletes. His approach to coaching reflects many of the same principles found in his classroom: discipline, preparation, perseverance, teamwork, accountability, character, and faith.
His contributions to athletics and the Oceanside community have received extraordinary recognition. Dave was inducted into the California Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004, followed by induction into both the Oceanside High School Hall of Fame and the San Diego County Baseball Hall of Fame in 2025.
Those honors represent tremendous accomplishments, but the greater legacy is found in the generations of young people he has taught, coached, mentored, and encouraged along the way.
Still Serving. Still Teaching. Still Investing.
Nearly five decades into his career as an educator, Dave continues doing what has defined so much of his life: investing in the next generation.
Outside the classroom, he serves as Lead Worship Pastor at his local church, continuing a life of ministry and worship rooted in the faith he first embraced as a teenager. He enjoys time with his family and remains deeply connected to the Oceanside community, including the Oceanside Pirates and the generations of students and athletes whose lives have intersected with his own.
Freedom Generation is blessed to have an educator with Dave's accomplishments. But his value to our students cannot be measured simply by degrees, credentials, championships, Hall of Fame inductions, or even 48-plus years in education.
It is the combination that makes him exceptional.
He is a scholar who still loves to teach.
A championship coach who understands mentorship.
A lifelong Christian who knows the importance of reaching young people early.
A worship pastor who understands that knowledge and faith belong together.
And a seasoned educator who still believes students should be challenged rather than underestimated.
His classes are rigorous because he believes students are capable. His faith is evident because he has spent a lifetime living it. And after more than 48 years of educating young people, he continues to give Freedom Generation students something increasingly rare:
the wisdom of a lifetime of experience, the expectations of an exceptional educator, and the spiritual investment of a man who genuinely wants the next generation to know truth, pursue excellence, and follow Christ for themselves.
